Meet the teacher

Marcia Levan-Harris was originally trained in Pilates more than 14 years ago by Conchita del Campo, one of the leading Body Control Pilates teachers. Marcia is

now a supervisor for other student teachers as well as being very experienced in all areas of Pilates instruction.

"I believe that Pilates keeps you feeling younger and fitter for longer." Marcia is certainly a testament to her belief, and proves it to us all with her energetic teaching and her tireless fund raising for the Breast Cancer Campaign. Marcia even finds time for gardening on her allotment, where she grows many of the fruit and vegetables for her delicious jams and chutneys which are on sale in the Studio to raise money for charity. "Pilates helps strengthen the immune system and improves stamina, and I really enjoy using my teaching to help clients recover from illness and injury."

A few words from Down Under

Marcia sends us this report from her trip to Australia: "I've spent three weeks in Australia and thought I would give you a taster of my experience of Pilates whilst there.

I arrived in Sydney on the 27th December and was very busy having booked quite a few trips so my Pilates experience was snatching some time in my hotel room and practising on my own. I did manage to get some good runs in around Darling Harbour.

Cont'd

On to Melbourne where there is a very wide choice of Pilates studios, many of which are run by physiotherapists and are strictly for rehabilitation. I found a very nice studio in the heart of the best coffee shops area (which I really enjoyed). Because it was an equipment studio the exercises were the classic Pilates repertoire, so I found them much the same as I teach. I did find that Melbourne really seems to take on alternative medicines and therapies, and you would be hard pushed to go more than a 100 yards without finding some alternative practitioner or another!

In Perth my old schoolfriend whom I went to stay with, took me to her local gym and I booked a one-off class. The girl who taught the class did ask if anyone was new to Pilates but did not enquire of any injuries. She talked about the breathing, but did not really explain about using core nor pelvic floor except in passing as the lesson got underway. I learnt some interesting slants on some exercises, however apart from spine curls and curl ups, one would have been hard pushed to know you were doing Pilates. She was quite vigilant and did walk round checking people, albeit there were 20+ people in the class. Near the end of the session she mentioned that an exercise we had just done was preparation for the teaser that they would learn later on in the course, (I believe that was week 2) but they wouldn't know what that was!! I piped up and said that I did and she replied that she knew that. After the class I told her that I was a Pilates teacher. Her response was that she was pleased that she didn't know before we started.

Well back to work on Monday, sporting a tan and a few extra pounds despite running nearly every day in all three cities in temperatures up to 34°C."

Meet the teacher

New Direction Pilates :: London & Essex
Originally from Sweden and now living in Buckhurst Hill, Anna Linder Lycett, 46, has been taking Pilates classes since 2004, and says that it has made a very real difference to her
health. Anna has suffered from a serious back condition, spondylolisthesis, and says that she has found core strengthening to be very beneficial.

With two young daughters and a demanding job as a compliance officer for a Private Equity firm, Anna still finds time to take two mat classes each week, with Judith and Vicky. "It's a time when you can simply concentrate on the exercises and forget about everything else."

One-to-Ones

Why not improve your mat work with some one-2-one tuition? Book as many or as few classes as you like at a time to suit you. Or take the leap from mat to the equipment. A tailor made package will be designed to meet your personal needs and goals, and to produce the maximum results. One-2-Ones are £60 per hour. Contact Marcia to book yours.

Resources

Did you know that you can order Pilates equipment from us and benefit from prices that are often a lot lower than the shops. If there is something you would like to order, just ask Marcia or Graham. The Pilates Bible, a great resource, is available from the office at only £10 per copy.

Need a venue?

You can hire The Studio outside of class times. Because of the nature of the studio floor, it is important that no shoes are worn. If you have an event that The Studio would be suitable for then please do let us know.

Local Savings

We've noticed a couple of local deals that could save you money: at Prezzo, opposite The Studio, you can get two main courses for only £12.95 and the offer is valid from Sunday to Thursday through to January 23rd. Register for Prezzo offers by going to www.prezzorestaurants.co.uk.

At Three Jolly Wheelers (735 Chigwell Road) – save 25% on your meal, Monday through to Friday in January. Register for the offer at www.vintageinn.co.uk.

If you notice any local deals that could help your fellow students to save money in 2012, please do let us know by e-mailing the details to Anne and we'll include them in the next newsletter.

Charity

The Christmas raffle raised over £80 for the Breast Cancer Campaign. Thank you all for your generosity.
